Construction Nest vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Nest vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Nest vs Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Nest vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
