Construction Tomorrow vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Tomorrow vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to present their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Tomorrow vs Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Tomorrow vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
