Construction Dreamcloud vs Purple
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Purple
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Purple
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Purple
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
