Construction Puffy Mattress vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Puffy Mattress vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Puffy Mattress vs Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Puffy Mattress vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
