Construction Dreamcloud vs Lyft
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Lyft
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their view as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Lyft
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Lyft
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
