Construction Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Signature
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Signature
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Signature
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Signature
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
