Construction Dreamcloud Mattress vs Casper
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Casper
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Casper
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Casper
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
