Construction Puffy vs Dreamcloud Mattress
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Puffy vs Dreamcloud Mattress
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Puffy vs Dreamcloud Mattress
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Puffy vs Dreamcloud Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
