Construction Is Dreamcloud Good For Side Sleepers
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Is Dreamcloud Good For Side Sleepers
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Is Dreamcloud Good For Side Sleepers
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Is Dreamcloud Good For Side Sleepers
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
