Construction Unboxing Dreamcloud Mattress
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Unboxing Dreamcloud Mattress
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Unboxing Dreamcloud Mattress
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Unboxing Dreamcloud Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
