Construction Dinky Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dinky Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dinky Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dinky Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
