Construction Dream Cloud Outline
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dream Cloud Outline
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their opinion as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dream Cloud Outline
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Outline
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
