Construction Dreamcloud Layers
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Layers
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to present their view too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Layers
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Layers
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
