Firmness
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional people to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud California King
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
