Construction Dreamcloud Mattresses
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Mattresses
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their view too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Mattresses
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattresses
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
