Construction Is Dreamcloud Too Firm
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Is Dreamcloud Too Firm
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Is Dreamcloud Too Firm
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Is Dreamcloud Too Firm
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
