Construction Dreamcloud Delivery Problems
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Delivery Problems
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three other individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Delivery Problems
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Delivery Problems
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
