Construction Dream Cloud Bed
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Bed
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their view as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud Bed
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Bed
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
