Construction Dream Cloud Palo Alto
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dream Cloud Palo Alto
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud Palo Alto
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Palo Alto
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
