Construction Dream Cloud Company
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dream Cloud Company
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dream Cloud Company
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new bed, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Company
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
