Construction Dreamcloud With Adjustable Base
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud With Adjustable Base
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three other people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud With Adjustable Base
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new bed, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud With Adjustable Base
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
