Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to present their view as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
