Construction How Good Is Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. How Good Is Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their view too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. How Good Is Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. How Good Is Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
