Construction California King Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. California King Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. California King Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. California King Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
