Construction Using A Mattress Pad With Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Using A Mattress Pad With Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to give their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Using A Mattress Pad With Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Using A Mattress Pad With Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
