Construction Dreamcloud Sega Game
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Sega Game
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional people to give their view too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Sega Game
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Sega Game
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
