Construction Dreamcloud Mattress.
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Mattress.
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Mattress.
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress.
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
