Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their view as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new bed, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.
