Construction Dreamcloud Level Sleep
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Level Sleep
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their view too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Level Sleep
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Level Sleep
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
