Construction Dreamcloud Raised
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Raised
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three other individuals to give their view too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Raised
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Raised
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
