Construction Aireloom vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Aireloom vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Aireloom vs Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Aireloom vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
