Construction Bear Mattress vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Bear Mattress vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional people to give their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Bear Mattress vs Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Bear Mattress vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
