Construction Call Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Call Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their view as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Call Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Call Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
