Construction Comsumer Reports Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Comsumer Reports Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Comsumer Reports Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Comsumer Reports Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
