Construction Dream Cloud Reviews
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Reviews
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dream Cloud Reviews
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Reviews
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
