Construction Dream Cloud vs Avocado Mattress
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud vs Avocado Mattress
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud vs Avocado Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Avocado Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
