Construction Dream Cloud vs Tempurpedic
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dream Cloud vs Tempurpedic
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to give their view as well. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud vs Tempurpedic
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Tempurpedic
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
