Construction Dream Cloud Yarn
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dream Cloud Yarn
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dream Cloud Yarn
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Yarn
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
