Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
