Construction Dreamcloud Break-in
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Break-in
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Break-in
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Break-in
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
