Construction Dreamcloud Expansion

Firmness

I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to present their view as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
