Construction Dreamcloud Glasses
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Glasses
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Glasses
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Glasses
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
