Construction Dreamcloud Mattress “Best Mattress”
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Mattress “Best Mattress”
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional people to present their view as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Mattress “Best Mattress”
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress “Best Mattress”
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
