Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Vs
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
