Construction Dreamcloud Pillow Reviews
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Pillow Reviews
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Pillow Reviews
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Pillow Reviews
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
