Construction Dreamcloud Set Up
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Set Up
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Set Up
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Set Up
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
