Construction Dreamcloud Setup
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Setup
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Setup
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Setup
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
