Construction Dreamcloud Sheets
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Sheets
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their view too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just describing the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Sheets
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Sheets
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
