Construction Dreamcloud Shield
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Shield
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply describing the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Shield
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Shield
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
