Construction Dreamcloud Smell
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Smell
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Smell
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Smell
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
